The Passport Bros movement existed way before this particular term gained traction and made the rounds on TikTok. From critics, it’s been called a mail-order bride with more steps: western men traveling to Asia and South America with the intention of sleeping with or marrying women, often driven by the perception that women in their home country have impossibly high standards or different life goals.
The term seems to have gained traction since last year, according to many articles. One particular passport bro got some serious heat when he made comments about some Brazilian woman being way easy to sleep with.
Of course, people on TikTok had their own comments, which is how I came across the term. This one made its way back on to Reddit, too, with many commenters pointing out that Passport Bros don’t seem to be seeking equal partnership, but servitude. To put it as Reddit users do, they’re looking for sex.
While, this can be one of the reasons Western men do travel overseas to find women for their own pleasure, the majority of Passport Bros do engage in this adventure to find real love and real relationships.
As a matter of fact, many Passport Bros start talking to women outside the country using Tinder Plus way before their trip, so when they do go to Asia or South America, they already have certain “leads” they can pursue.
Their main destinations are The Philippines and Thailand which are the hubs of the Passport Bros. Plenty of foreigner men can be seen in Manila and Bangkok with local women, and all of them seem happy and excited to just be there.
While ‘passport bros’ is a new term, this is clearly not a new way of thinking; and there’s a bigger conversation to be had here about where these men fit in relation to incel culture and emerging ‘trad wife’ trends.
