Why do we need circuit breakers?

In the absence of an effective and functional tripping mechanism, it is not safe for the electrical system, and it can get damaged, posing a risk to others as well. The absence of an efficient tipping mechanism is known as the fault, and it is defined and categorized in different ways.

The first one is the overload fault. In overload, the electricity surge is sudden, and the circuits experience a high current flow. The second fault is a short circuit. There is a spark in the circuit in a short circuit, and it causes fire-related accidents if not tripped.

Then we have the earth leakage. The current spills outside the electrical device and seeps into proximity objects and devices. If the materials are conductive, then there are high chances of electrocution.

Low-voltage circuit breakers are needed to keep electrical devices and components safe and sound. It is necessary to protect the system against these electrical faults.

What are the types of low-voltage circuit breakers?

The low voltage circuit breakers are used in the systems that need up to 1KV or kilowatts, and there are several types of low voltage types:

Molded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB)

The Molded Case Circuit Breaker is housed in the molding, hence the name. This can be used in electrical devices with current ratings up to 1600 amperes. It protects from overloading and short circuit, which uses a mechanism of bimetal and solenoid.

Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB)

The MCBs protect the circuits and devices when the current ratings are quite low. It is mostly used in household electronic devices with up to 125 amperes of current. It prevents overloading and short circuit using the same mechanism as MCCB. These are very quick in tripping and prevent damage.

 Air Circuit Breaker (ACB)

The air circuit breaker is used with the medium of arc quenching. This is very useful in high current using applications. It protects against overloading and short circuits up to 6300 amps.

Motor Protection Circuit Breaker (MPCB)

PCBs are used in applications that require motor protection. It works as a standalone device and offers protection against overload, short circuits & single phasing. This is perfect for motor applications.

Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB)

It works as a current spillage and offers protection against earth leakage. This can be combined with electronic devices in homes, offices & other industrial settings. It can also be modified and changed to support the current sensitivity of the device and application. It detects the current leakage and trips if it senses something.

There are several advantages of using the low voltage industrial circuit breakers, including the safety it provides like:

  • The circuit breakers are easily able to identify any fault areas.
  • The electrical supply is resumed automatically after the tripping.
  • These come with a knob and provides a better interface.
  • It makes the devices safer for use.
  • The low voltage industrial circuit breakers are highly sensitive than other fuses.
  • These require next to no maintenance.

How do circuit breakers make electrical devices reliable?

The circuit breaker acts exactly like its name and provides safety to our electrical devices. It works automatically and operates the electrical switches. The low voltage industrial circuit breakers are designed to protect the electric circuits and prevent damage due to overload and short circuits.

The most basic function of the circuit breakers is to detect a fault and interrupt the flow of current if it senses something. These are additional devices that manually or remotely control the conditions of a power surge. These come in handy in cases of fault conditions.

Any typical industrial circuit breaker has several fixed and moving parts. If there is no fault, the contacts stay closed and do not open unless there is a fault. It detects the fault in the entire system, and if there is a fault in any system, the trip will come down, and the relay circuit will move the contacts and opens the circuits.

The circuit breaker contacts should bring the weight current without immoderate heating, resisting the arc’s heat produced while interrupting the circuit. These contacts are made with extremely conductive material. The working lifecycle is confined by erosion of touch material because of arcing. The arc among the contacts produced because of the ionization of air or the vapor of oil acts as a conductor.

When a short circuit occurs, a current overload flows by circuit breaker contacts earlier than they may be opened.
