When you think of packaging, you think of cardboard boxes. Cardboard boxes are a standard for shipping, storing, and packaging items and are used by businesses, retailers, and consumers alike for distributing, shipping, and moving. Despite being a common household material, there is little we know about its material and strength. Cardboard boxes are available in different packaging materials to meet your requirements; for instance, some are moisture-resistant, while others are tear-resistant. Knowing the differences between these varieties can help you find the right type for your business or moving needs.

We have listed some of the most common cardboard box packaging types to make it easier for you. Before diving deep into the types of cardboard box packaging, we first need to understand how they are made. Cardboard boxes combine flute profiles to offer cushioning, compression strength, and total thickness. Larger flutes offer greater vertical strength, while smaller flutes offer enhanced structural capabilities.

Now that we know the basic configuration, let’s discuss the different types below.

Single-Face Board

A single-face board is the most common type of cardboard box packaging in which the corrugated layer only has a single straight piece on one side. It separates different items packed in a single box to prevent damage during transit.

Corrugated Fiberboard

These types of cardboard boxes are triple-layered, with two straight pieces on each side and a wavy surface in the middle, called fluting. The wavy surface increases the compression and cushioning strength of the box and ensures you can ship heavier items in it without the risk of damage or tears. The width of the wavy surface determines its strength and size. These boxes are available in different types. The sizes are indicated by letters, such as A-Flute has approximately 33 flutes per foot, B-Flute has 47 flutes per foot, and C-Flute has 39 flutes per foot.

Single-Wall Board

This is your standard cardboard box and is commonly used by retailers. It consists of only a single flute layer between two straight surfaces. It can be used for packaging heavier items as it is durable and sturdy with only one flute layer.

Double-Wall Board

This type of cardboard box packaging offers two flute layers between two straight surfaces. This reinforces the sturdy packaging and ensures the items safely and easily reach their destination.

Triple-Wall Board

As you must have guessed, triple-wall board boxes offer 3 layers of flutes between two straight surfaces. These boxes are only used for extra-heavy and valuable items like computer parts, electronic machinery, etc. You can also find boxes with more than 3 flute layers, but they are rarely used.

Paperboard

A paperboard is a thin cardboard material used for packing non-load-bearing items like paper rolls, cereals, etc. It is lightweight and less sturdy than corrugated cardboard boxes. It is also called a carton or chipboard.

Conclusion

Depending on your usage or business, you can choose from various cardboard box packaging types and save money. For instance, using a single-wall board for a cereal box isn’t necessary and takes up more space, money, and resources. We hope this article helps you find the right fit for your business and needs.
