Interior design is always an interesting, and never-ending topic. You can always make a few improvements and changes here and there, but it may seem like the kitchen is always on that list. Breaking the bank and re-design it every once in a while, is not a fun activity. Luckily, there are plenty of tricks and tips that can make your kitchen look brand-spanking new, without costing you an arm and a leg in the process.Â
Bonus points go towards easy implementations, and creative solutions, that you probably didn’t even know are out there. As we all spend a lot of time in our kitchens, it is nice to refresh the scenery every once in a while, add functionality and make the place more enjoyable. All the while not making that a chore or a hassle.
1. Multipurpose kitchen appliances
Does your kitchen feel like it’s overstuffed and that you have no room to breathe and move? Like an overstuffed turkey, that’s rarely a good thing. If you have to move items that are constantly in your way and make room just to cook, then that’s a sure sign that things need to change. There are plenty of multi-practical or multifunctional kitchen appliances out there that will make your life easier. Two in one, or more, they can replace all those items that are clogging up the place. And save you time, money and hassle of not having to use multiple appliances for the same thing. The more functions are better here, and keep that motto in mind when equipping your kitchen.
2. Corner drawers and labelling
The cornerstone of every kitchen is its drawers with all that cooking treasure inside. Kitchen corners are usually overlooked or not used at all, which is a shame as all that space goes to waste. The more drawer space, the better. You can store all those utensils, containers and whatnot in them and not have them all lying around, cluttering the place. It’s all about functionality, and as you aim to get the most out of your appliances, you can aim the same for your kitchen space as well.
3. Waste not, want not
This golden example for all things in life is usable for this situation as well. There are appliances in your kitchen that you love and have used for a very long time. With most of these, you are familiar and comfortable to use. They have already been incorporated into your kitchen design, and you can hardly picture a vision without them. That’s when appliance maintenance and repair come into play. Any appliance that you have can have its parts removed and fixed or have regular maintenance scheduled.Â
Quality and in-expensive oven repairs can prolong its lifespan, and it’s way cheaper than buying a new one. You are also contributing by making less waste. From kitchen appliances, you can make all that leftover food work for you as well. Storing them in containers and then in a fridge, makes for a cleaner kitchen, and you always have the option of grabbing a quick meal when you simply don’t wish to cook.Â
4. Let’s light it up!
Proper lighting is associated with our well-being and mental health. With that in mind, it is easy to see how important it is to invite Mother Nature into your kitchen. Spread open those drapes, let the sunshine in and you will see the place in a new light. An open window represents opportunities and inspiration that can light that fire when you need to make up a meal. Speaking of inviting Mother Nature in, here is our next item.
5. Spice plants
If you’ve ever seen a cooking show, you’ve probably seen them have and use freshly cut leaves from various plants. It doesn’t come and is fresher and more natural than having small potted plants all around your kitchen. Not only will it break the monotony, but these plants also exude a pleasant smell. Basel, oregano, various spicy peppers, thyme, the list can go on and on. They only need regular water and are available for you at any time to use. Since they are always in front of your eyes, these easy to maintain plants are there to help with anything you have cooking up.
6. Colour coding and labelling
When we spoke about things that can influence our health earlier, there is one more item to add to this topic and that colour. You probably notice that all fast food and food-related companies use red, orange, yellow and similar colours as they have been proven to entice the appetite. Colours affect our behaviour, and you can use this knowledge when you re-paint or arrange items in your kitchen. One thing that can make the kitchen more appealing, is to order things by colour or colour code your drawers.Â
It is easy to make a huge mess, when you go thru all of your drawers, one by one, and they all look the same. But, if you use labels, for example, your kitchen can look like a professional lab and be as efficient. Every tool has its place, and when you cook, there is no need to make an extra mess. With a simple glance, you will know what’s where, and those pesky utensils that you thought were gone, will be in your hands before you know it. If you are looking for one more reason to live, take a look at professional tool racks or garages. The same principle applies here.
Making any changes or progress may seem like it’s gated behind a steep learning curve. But, in reality, it’s quite the opposite, as making any change is better than none. One by one, making small incremental improvements will lead you on the path of progress. In no time at all, you will be able to see and reap the fruits of your labour. Having an organised, fresh and modern kitchen won’t be a dream anymore as the effort you put into it will surely make up for the results. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
